Steinbach at a Glance
The city of Steinbach is situated in the Eastern
Region of the province of Manitoba.
It is located 61 km (38 mi) from Winnipeg,
near the borders of the United States
and Ontario. In 2006, the city
was named the fastest growing in Manitoba, based on a five-year census period.
The city was settled in 1874 by German-speaking Mennonites from Russia. Steinbach
has held on to its Mennonite roots, and maintained a liquor prohibition until
a 2003 local referendum vote. The Mennonite
Heritage Village Museum epitomizes the city's heritage with a reconstructed
village and interpretive displays. Within the village is a traditional Mennonite
restaurant, the Livery
Barn, which serves the Mennonites' favourite cuisine at reasonable prices.
The annual Pioneer
Days festival is also held at the museum. This celebration of Mennonite pioneer
settlers occurs over four days every August. Activities such as butter churning,
log cutting, an auction, horse shows and a barbecue bring in thousands of visitors
every year.
